  • What is Titanium?
  • The name titanium was derived from the Titans of Greek mythology, known for their extreme and superior strength. Titanium is naturally a platinum gray color. By applying heat or electricity in the manufacturing process, the special ability to reflect light in unique ways is enhanced and the surface of the metal becomes especially beautiful to see. This process, called anodizing, causes the creation of a surface film on the metal called titanium oxide and it is this oxide that provides a surface hue similar to the luminescent colors of oil on water, a peacock's feather, or a rainbow.

Titanium has had a greater impact on the progress of mankind than any other single element known. It has allowed us to probe the depths of the seas and the infinite vastness of space, and it has made possible advances in medicine and health care never before imagined.

Titanium is a brilliant white metal in its pure form and one of the most abundant elements in the Earth's crust. Obtained from rutile, ilmenite and sphens, as well as vitanites and many iron ores, titanium is lighter than steel but just as strong. It is this amazing character of Titanium that has made it the darling metal of the aerospace industry. It can be mixed with several other metals to make specialty alloys, and is used in industrial machinery where the critical combination of lightness with super strength is essential.

Titanium is more resistant and has the highest strength to weight ratio of ANY known element, which is why 85% of the Space Shuttles structure is titanium. Titanium is extremely durable and strong. In jewelry applications, titanium’s strength allows for design capabilities that were otherwise impossible. Titanium can be worn throughout active and demanding lifestyles without any concern for wear and tear, as it is virtually impervious to the beating it takes in any environment. Titanium survives in its original lustrous state under conditions that would destroy normal gold or silver jewelry.

Titanium is the most biocompatible element known to man, and therefore the material of preference in the medical world for surgical tools, implants, pacemaker cases, and other internal casings. It will not react to ANY chemistry other than Hydrofluoric acid. Pure titanium is 100% hypoallergenic. It won’t react with any part of the body, making it a great choice for even those persons most sensitive to other materials. And, unlike silver, titanium will never tarnish.
